Early September weather

We are considering a Kiawah Island vacation for the week of Labor Day. What weather conditions are typical of this area during early September?

Early September weather

Unless we are having a hurricane, the September weather is lovely! It%26#39;s hot and sunny, with somewhat lower humidity than in July and August. The ocean is WARM and great for swimming.

We vacation on Kiawah in September every year, because of some family birthdays. So far, we have had great luck with the weather; however, trip insurance is always a good idea during hurricane season.

Early September weather

It IS beautiful here that time og year. Just remember, though, if the evacuation is recommended, do it.

If you%26#39;re into kayaking, September is considered the best month of the year for paddling in the Lowcountry area...still hot enough, but not too hot. We love September!

You may be hitting Kiawah right, if you look carefully, for some rate reductions around Labor Day. There used to be lots of cheaper rates already available around Labor Day, because the SC kids go back to school earlier than some of the northern kids, but alas, over time, it was noticed that the Yankees were still coming, w/the kids, so the rates are still summer rates for the most part, but, like I said, look carefully, you might find a few who drop down in mid-August.

Inexpensive Hotel Suggestions

Our family will be staying at the Sea Crest in mid July. My son will be coming in for a few days but would like to stay at a separate hotel. He would like it to be close by but inexpensive (under $120)so the Holiday Inn Oceanfront is out. Away from the beach is OK since he will be spending time with us. Any suggestions?

Inexpensive Hotel Suggestions

There is a Red Roof, Days Inn and Motel 6 all near Shelter Cove area.

Inexpensive Hotel Suggestions

Perk: All of those suggested are all too far away. I would strongly suggest he try hotwire.com. Not too sure how much will be available in July, but it%26#39;s worth a try. If he can get a deal on a four star resort it will either be the Crowne Plaza in Shipyard Plantation (closest to you), the Hilton Oceanfront in Palmetto Dunes, next closest, or the Westin Resort in Port Royal, the furthest.

If you give me your dates, I will try and see what comes up. Usually, you get the most reduced rates closer to your check-in.

We just stayed at the Hilton Oceanfront on March 6th for an amazing $59 a night. He could also try putting a bid on Priceline for a ';resort'; which will be one of the above, or a regular hotel, but who knows what he will end up with.

Hope this helps,

I had a bad experience at Motel 6 several years ago. I%26#39;ll never go near that one again.

Friends of ours say Red Roof Inn is fine.

Beachwalk Hotel is walking distance to Sea Crest. They are currently showing a $99 nightly rate for July 14-16.

Good luck!

- Jeff

The comfort inn is right across the street from the Holiday Inn, it%26#39;s probably below 120.

Perk: check your tripadvisor messages. I have sent you a message with the icons that betterbidding uses for the Hilton Head hotels offered on Hotwire.

Hope this helps,

D in Muskoka.

D...please send the same information to me on how to get a better rate on hotwire or priceline. Thanks!

SCRAPHAPPTY: I think you misunderstood the post. Betterbidding.com is a site that shows what hotels hotwire and priceline use. You cannot get a better rate by going on that site. I was merely telling Perk that if you go on betterbidding, you can usually figure out what hotel you are getting through hotwire.

Towers on the Grove Vacation

My family is taking a well deserved vacation and Staying at the Towers the first week in June. I%26#39;ve found only a few pictures online and there%26#39;s only a few postings in the forums from earlier in the year. Has anyone stayed there recently (within the last two weeks). I surprised my wife with the trip and I really want her to see more of the resort. I hear, from these forums, that the place is wonderful and much more low key than the south side of Myrtle Beach, which is what we are looking for. We are bringing our 15 month old to introduce the ocean to her and we are busting at the seams with anticipation. Any info, tips, or photos would be greatly appreciated. I%26#39;ll definitely post a review when we return since everyone on this site has been so helpful. I feel I should pay it forward.

HAPPY TRAVELS!!

Towers on the Grove Vacation

It%26#39;s a brand new resort... towersonthegrove.com is their website (if you haven%26#39;t seen it). Walking distance to Boulineau%26#39;s (grocery, giftshop, etc..), Basil%26#39;s Pizza, Duffy Street Seafood Shack and Atlantis Pancake House. Probably less than a mile to the Cherry Grove Pier. 15 month old will love the beach, though they will try and eat as much sand as they can! ; )

Towers on the Grove Vacation

ncgator summed it up. We stay about a block from TOTG every year and you will be in the perfect location. The beach is great, not too crowded and everything is pretty much in walking distance. Have a good trip.

Beach chair rentals?

I%26#39;m visiting North Myrtle Beach next month with my family. We%26#39;re staying at the Ashworth. I%26#39;ll be flying, and obviously won%26#39;t be able to bring all my beach stuff with me. Are there beach chair and umbrella rentals in North Myrtle Beach? Any information or tips would be greatly appreciated!!

Beach chair rentals?

On SOB, they run $30/day. You save money with multiple-day rentals, but have to pay all up front.

Beach chair rentals?

Hi...this year we are driving to Myrtle Beach so we can bring our own beach chairs. For the years when we flew there, we used to go the store and purchase some sand chairs for the beach. They are very cheap in several places...Walgreens or any other chain store like that. You can get 2 of them for less than the price of a one day rental. At the end of the week we would give them to someone who had just checked in to the hotel. We were happy, and they were very greatful. Iris

My girlfriend just got back from the Ashworth and she said she called North Strand Beach Service and rented 2 of those real good wooden beach chairs and an umbrella for $60 for the week. They delivered them to her. There were some already set up on the beach but they were to expensive. I think it was $150 for the week. She said another family they met rented one of those instant setup tents with 4 chairs for $100. I know they have a web site www.northstrandbeachservice.com

or you can always go to walmart when you get here. Have fun!!

I know in the MB area...that if you ';bring your own'; umbrella, you cannot sit it up in front of where the lifeguards have placed theirs (which is usually high tide line)....I%26#39;ve just always been a fan of having someone else lug all my stuff to the beach, so we always rented the beach chairs/umbrellas when we vacationed here (usually 2 and then we%26#39;d ';share';)

In fact...when we made the move here, that was the first few peices of furniture that we purchased! Those really nice wooden beach chairs and the nice canvas umbrella.....wish I could%26#39;ve purchased one of the lifeguards to carry it all to the beach for me too! LOL

:)

They don%26#39;t have that rule in NMB about setting up your umbrella. I was there this spring and a police officer told me the lifeguards no longer rent chairs and umbrellas.

Frokfan,

I%26#39;m assuming you will have a rental car. My suggestion is to go to Walmart or one of the beach shops and buy some cheap chairs and an umbrella. You can use them all week and when you leave, you can just leave them at the resort. I%26#39;m sure someone will put them to good use after you leave. I can%26#39;t believe that they would charge that kind of money for a one day rental. You can easily get a chair and umbrella for less than the cost of one day%26#39;s rental.

Last year I bought a sand chair.. 3 position..woo hoo

for 12.00 at one of those beach stores...

Hi forkfan,

My husband and I are in North Myrtle Beach now, we are leaving tomorrow. We rented the beach chairs and umbrellas from Monday to Friday it was $90 and well worth the money. You cannot set your umbrella up in front of the rental umbrellas I witnessed people being moved. This time of year the beach behind the rental umbrellas is pretty full with people setting up umbrellas and massive structures (little pavillions). For us the money was well spent, we don%26#39;t have to carry anything and we are guaranteed a place in front everyday. You can keep an eye on the kids much better too! I%26#39;m not sure how far up you will be but we are at the Ocean Reef if that helps any.

Have fun.

This has been extremely helpful. I%26#39;m actually staying at the Ashworth, so I was glad to see mention of it. I%26#39;m looking forward to my beach time!

What about beach blanket/towel/sand chair with NO umbrella, can you set that up closer to the water than the rental chair/umbrella setup?

Looking for Updated Folly Restaurant Reviews

We%26#39;ll be staying on Folly Beach in April and would like to have 1-2 dinners/lunches there. We plan to be in Charleston for other meals during the week.

Any suggestions?

Our group is 2 grandparents, 2 parents and a teenager.

Would like a beach/water view.

Love seafood--prefer grilled over fried.

Any advice, Locklears vs Crab Shack?

Anything new or must-do?

Looking for Updated Folly Restaurant Reviews

Locklear%26#39;s and the Holiday Inn are the only 2 ocean view restaurants. I had brunch at Locklear%26#39;s the other week, and wasn%26#39;t overly impressed. I have heard good things about the food at the Holiday Inn, and the menu looks nice, however, have not eaten there. They have small plates as well as dinner entrees. Lunch menu is limited. Crab Shack is mostly fried food. Blue plate specials for lunch at the Shack, Follywood, and Center Kitchen, which is new and good. $8 for a choice of meat and 2 sides, mix and match, however, no seafood. $10 for a catfish plate.

I have not been to Locklear%26#39;s on the pier, but I do regularly go to Locklear%26#39;s in Mt Pleasant. They offer a large selection and the view from the pier is awesome. Have fun.

I forgot about the Surf Bar. They have a wood burning oven/grill, and their selections change daily, but the food is very good, and they will usually have a grilled fish--if they don%26#39;t run out.

We%26#39;ve been to both Locklear%26#39;s, and the FB one is a little pricier as I recall and the food good but not as good as MtP. Of course, the view is MUCH better at Locklear%26#39;s Folly! We ate outside on the deck on a nice, not hot, early summer day. mmmmmmmmmm

Christmas time in Charleston

I%26#39;m thinking of taking my 82 year old Mom to Charleston the first week in December. What is your opinion about the best place to stay and what we should do.Great location in hotel is primary. If the hotel decorated for Christmas that would be great. Price isn%26#39;t too big of concern. I%26#39;m looking for a very nice, convenient place...thanks!

Christmas time in Charleston

Charleston Place is beautiful for Christmas. What is your mother%26#39;s mobility?

Christmas time in Charleston

Mom is slow..but gets around quite well! She can certainly walk a few blocks..but the more convenient the better. Also, what activities are not to be missed?

She LOVES Christmas time and all the lights and decorations.

Walking downtown can be tough, because of the cobblestones. Roads are narrowed, and parking is scarce. Charleston Place is right on Market Street, however. Definitely do a carriage tour. Also, you want to drive through James Island County Park, as it is the ultimate Christmas light experience. A beach island day would be nice, Folly Beach is essentially 4 blocks long, with beach shops. There are 2 restaurants on the ocean for lunch. You could break up your week between downtown and the beach.

My mother is 84 and walks with a cane, so I%26#39;m reaching for things that she could do.

We did something different this past Christmas in Charleston...there is a progressive dinner which is put on by the parent of Circa 1886 (Wentworth Mansion) and 2 of their other B%26amp;B%26#39;s. Appetizers at one, mains at 1886, dessert/coffee at another.

Lots of fun, they take you from place to place in the horse drawn carriages. All food was excellent. There%26#39;s nothing on the site now, they run it from Thanksgiving through Dec. 23 (or something close to that), you might check w/them in a few months...

http://www.circa1886.com/circa-index.asp

Yes, indeed - fully agree with the Progressive dinner. A very good value and an event for an entire evening.

You%26#39;ll probably also want to go shopping - there are free horse-drawn carriage rides through Mt. Pleasant%26#39;s Towne Center shopping center - really got us into the holiday spirit.

These are great suggestions. I%26#39;ll look into Charleston Place. I%26#39;m excited about the progressive dinner too. What about the lighted boat show I%26#39;ve read about and the parade?

I believe the Christmas Boat Parade is quite early in the season - maybe the first week in December. Check the ';Festivals and Events'; under ';Things to Do'; as most of these events repeat annually.

I think the first weekend in Dec.is when we would come.

I checked into Charleston Place...it%26#39;s too much. More suggestions? I think between $200-$300 is acceptable.
