we are going to visit charleston. driving from NY stopping in savannah for 1 night (hampton HD), then to FL for 5 nights, then to charleston.
99% decided on the doubletree (suite) and wanted advice in re: to nearby (will have car but prefer to walk) lively nightspots and authentic (moderately priced - no more than $100 total) restaurant recommendations.
any negatives about the DT?
thanks so much!
30s Couple - 2 days in Charlestoncan%26#39;t edit but title should read ';2 nights/3days';
30s Couple - 2 days in CharlestonThere are numerous restaurants that will get you 2 meals for under $100. Where you get in trouble with that figure is if you order a bottle of wine or a few drinks. We have a list of restaurant links that you should check out - go to ';Restaurants'; in the left column of this page and then click on ';Restaurant Links';. If you let us know the type of cuisine you%26#39;re looking for (seafood, southern, steakhouse, etc) it%26#39;ll help us narrow down. Charleston is a small city but we are dense with restaurants.
thanks so much for your reply. i have bookmarked a few charleston and mt pleasant low key and laid back choices:
- crave
- vickerys
- a.w shucks
- hominy grill
- shem creek bar and grill
- red%26#39;s
- RBs
- tommy condons
- vendue
Crave is on the moderate ';plus'; side - the others are moderate and good choices. Oh, and just b/c their websites aren%26#39;t impressive doesn%26#39;t mean the restaurants aren%26#39;t any good - the group of restaurants including Mustard Seed and Long Point grill (owns Boulevard Diner, Sette, etc) is absolutely excellent - great atmosphere, great food. I%26#39;d recommend Long Point Cafe at the end of Long Point Road (about 3+ miles past Boone Hall) for fantastic food, really nice atmosphere, and great service at a good value. Some nights they have 1/2 price bottles of wine as well.
in re: to ';looks can be deceiving';, how is melvin%26#39;s bbq?
http://www.melvinsbbq.com/
Melvins is ok but I usually get their burgers. I agree about Mustard Seed and Boulivard Diner. Both have locations in Mt P and on James Island. Are you asking about Vickery%26#39;s on Shem Creek or downtown? I have not eaten at AW Shucks in many years...shall I say more?
There are a lot of wonderful restaturants in Chraleston that are within the budget you are suggesting. you may want to consider SNOB, Mistrals or Hanks.
Many of the restaurants you have listed are sort of on the ';touristy'; side. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but I think there is much better food in Charleston than some of your picks represent. I would keep Hominy Grill on the list, but for your budget, I would check out Hank%26#39;s, Cru Cafe, Boulevard Diner, SNOB, the Mustard Seed, and Coast. You could walk to any of those except for the Boulevard Diner and the Mustard Seed. Really it depends on your dining habits, because if you each ordered an entree and split a starter/dessert, without alcohol, you could make it out of pretty much any restaurant in Charleston under $100. We aren%26#39;t really wine drinkers and we usually get out of the Peninsula Grill with 1 starter, 2 entrees, 2 desserts, 2 iced teas for about $120.
If you like seafood, definitely check Hank%26#39;s, which is right across Hayne St. from the Doubletree. If you want a ';social'; experience, try dining at the long communal table or at the bar. If you want a quiet, private table, reserve early; they open at 5:30 pm.
thanks SO much for ALL your replies. we definitely like seafood and would imagine that it would be very fresh considering the town%26#39;s proximity to the water. we really aren%26#39;t avid fine diners (much prefer a low key, local restaurant with authentic food and a lively atmosphere). we aren%26#39;t big dessert eater but do enjoy a few glasses of wine or bottles of beer with dinner.
i will make sure to add the above to the list and thanks again for ALL the suggestions!
