do you have to drive yourself to the plantations for a tour there or do you get to take a tour bus, etc? from downtown? i.e. middleton place, magnolia, etc.

There are tour bus companies that will take you there. Your hotel concierge will be able to make all of the arrangements, or check out the Things to Do - and Tours section (see left)

There is also a service to drop you off that is offered by one of the tour guide services. They pick you up at the Visitors Center and drop you off at the plantation with no additional tour service so it is cheaper. Check with the Visitors Center.
