I have never been to Charleston, so please bear with me. Plan to drive up there April 2 after visiting Savannah and head back to NY on April 4. I now hear about this yearly run. Does anyone know if I-95 is congested Saturday morning?(10-11 am) Also I was thinking of staying in the N. Charleston area to avoid the crowds, now I%26#39;m reading it%26#39;s not such a great area and a lot of motels are dirty. My buget is $100 per night.
thank you
Charleston area
We are far off of I95 so I wouldn%26#39;t worry about traffic. After the Bridge Run, there will be ';exiting Charleston'; traffic but you will probably not be affected. North Charleston has some very nice hotels as well as some clunkers, some good areas and some bad areas - so read the TA reviews before you book. N. Charleston is about 20 minutes to the Historic District.
Charleston area
If I was going to stay in Charleston, I%26#39;d probably try to stay in the historic district. It%26#39;s gorgeous, and most of the things you%26#39;ll probably want to see/do are there anyway. There%26#39;s plenty of shopping and restaurants within walking distance.
The only problem is that hotels in town may be full. You may want to make some calls to be sure you have a room when you get here!
If you%26#39;re not in a hurry you may want to get off I95 and drive up Highway 17. Lots of grand oaks and spanish moss make that drive pleasant.
Have a safe trip.
I agree - in town will be full and probably not worth wasting time looking for a place on April 4. April 5, maybe, but unfortunately you picked probably the single day of the year that the largest number of people come to town.
On our many visits to Charlestion, SC we have found two hotels we would recomend to stay.
1) North Charlestion area - Residence Inn Charlestion Airport. This area is noisey but clean and safe with nice rooms and a free breakfast with a social hour that serves food and drink.
2)Closer to the historic (sp) district is - Residence Inn Downtown/Riverview it is apx 10 minuits away from the downtown area right accross the bridge. This area is very safe and not congested. We stay here most of the time when we come down to MUSC in Charleston. Here they serve breakfast and also have the social hour where we enjoy drinks (beer, wine and soft drinks) and food different finger foods along with sandwitches saving buying 2 meals a day when in town. This area is not loud or congested. Both are clean and well cared for hotels.Hope this helps.
The Residence Inn Riverview and the Springhill Suites next door to it are both Marriott properties. They are located just off the connector to downtown. Some of the Springhill Suites even have shuttle services but I do not know if that one does. The area is very quiet and over looks the marina and Ashley River. I have never been inside either hotel but it looks like you may have some riverview rooms. They are just around the corner from California Dreaming restaurant. There is also a La Quinta nearby that may be in your budget.
